An Italian blog managed to get hold of HTC Desire HD and ran Quadrant benchmark application on it. (see the source link)
So what was the result? 1974!
How does it compare with other existing phones? Check out the following link:

There seems to be a big range of scores for 1GHz 1st generation Snapdragon phones with Froyo:
1580: Nexus One
1445: HTC Desire
1202: HTC Droid Incredible
Given the huge discrepancies between these phones which are supposed to have near identical hardware specs, I would say Nexus One's result was based on an optimized setup (e.g. a custom ROM). So it might be reasonable to assume unmodified 1st generation Snapdragon phones typically scores 1200 - 1500.
Quadrant app tests CPU, Memory, I/O, 2D and 3D aspects of the phone. Given the specification of MSM8255, it might be reasonable to assume CPU, Memory and I/O performances have not changed since the 1st generation design. So a 33% net score improvement was achieved by influencing only on the 40% of the test categories meaning between 2D and 3D areas, MSM8255 performs about two times better than the older sibling processors.
So is it as fast as the current champ Samsung Galaxy S series phones? Not quite. Before the "XDA fix" was found, this answer would have been "yes". But with this fix (which is a valid fix that will improve the overall performance of the device), MSM8255 based phone will not overtake the performance crown from Galaxy S series. But it is a strong alternative that many will be happy to own.
